Revitalizing a 1966 Engineering Marvel
The bascule bridge, originally constructed in 1966 by the Austrian firm Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG, stands as a unique double-leaf rolling structure. It serves as a critical link between the Garden Reach-Metiabruz region and the rest of Kolkata, functioning as both a primary road route for heavy vehicles and local traffic and a navigational passage for cargo ships between Kidderpore Dock-I and Dock-II. Over the decades, this bridge has been integral to the port's operations, but its aging components necessitated a major upgrade to meet contemporary logistical demands.

To execute this renovation, SMPK has partnered with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). After inviting competitive bids, the contract was awarded to H & H Fressinet, Mumbai, a firm specializing in infrastructure projects.
