Surat Diamond Bourse Sees Major Boost as 100 Traders Launch Operations
In a fresh push to make the world's largest office complex fully functional, around 35 leading diamond traders and 65 small traders began operations at the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) on Wednesday. This development marks a significant milestone for the bourse, which has seen several attempts to operationalize it since its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2023.
Landmark Moment for the Diamond Trade
SDB committee members described the move as a landmark moment, stating that for the first time, prominent traders have commenced operations from the complex. They emphasized that the presence of these leading traders will help complete the diamond trade ecosystem at the bourse, positioning it as a global trading hub.
The 35 top traders started functioning from their own offices, while the 65 small traders began work from co-working cabins within the complex. Many of these traders previously operated from the traditional diamond hubs of Mahidharpura and Varachha, and they recently completed furnishing their offices before making the shift.
Unity and Growth in the Industry
SDB vice chairman Laljibhai Patel termed the move a sign of unity within Surat's diamond industry. He expressed confidence that more traders will shift to the bourse in the coming months, further strengthening its role as a premier global trading destination. The premises witnessed significant activity throughout the day, with traders, brokers, and staff marking the beginning of operations in a vibrant atmosphere.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Connectivity
To support this growth, several infrastructure improvements have been implemented:
- New Bus Routes: Three new bus routes have been introduced from Varachha, Katargam, and Adajan, with multiple trips scheduled daily to improve connectivity for traders and employees.
- Customs Office: The Customs department has set up an office at the bourse to facilitate trade and exports, streamlining processes for international business.
Future Prospects and Momentum
SDB committee members said the positive momentum from this launch is expected to encourage more traders from Mahidharpura and Varachha to shift their operations in the near future. Several new office openings are anticipated in the coming months, as the bourse aims to attract a wider range of diamond industry players.
This move not only revitalizes the Surat Diamond Bourse but also underscores Surat's pivotal role in the global diamond trade, with potential to boost local economy and create new opportunities in the sector.
