The city gas distribution project led by THINK Gas is fundamentally reshaping the energy dynamics in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's state capital, by dramatically increasing access to environmentally friendly and safer fuel options for both residential consumers and the transportation sector. This ambitious initiative, centered on the widespread deployment of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure, is poised to offer a viable and sustainable substitute for conventional liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and diesel, marking a significant step toward cleaner urban living.
Substantial Investment and Extensive Pipeline Network
According to recent data released by THINK Gas, the company has successfully installed approximately 591 kilometers of pipeline throughout the Thiruvananthapuram district as a core component of the primary gas distribution network. This monumental effort is supported by a substantial estimated investment of Rs 700 crore, which underscores the project's scale and commitment to modernizing the region's energy framework. The newly established network serves as the critical foundation for the city's integrated gas grid, already catering to tens of thousands of connections across heavily populated urban zones and extending into growing suburban regions.
Rapid Growth in PNG and CNG Adoption
Official statistics reveal that the expanded pipeline system has facilitated more than 16,000 PNG connections for households and commercial entities within the Thiruvananthapuram city corporation boundaries, encompassing a diverse range of businesses and industrial operations. THINK Gas representatives emphasized that this expansion is in harmony with wider national and state-level objectives to accelerate natural gas usage as an integral part of India's broader energy transition strategy. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has sanctioned city gas projects in over 300 geographical areas nationwide, with ambitious targets to achieve millions of PNG connections by 2032 and foster increased utilization of low-emission fuels across the country.
Future Plans and Infrastructure Enhancements
To further encourage the shift toward cleaner automotive fuels, THINK Gas has outlined plans to operationalize four additional CNG stations in the district by March 2026. The area already benefits from several functioning CNG outlets, bolstered by high-capacity liquefied compressed natural gas facilities like the one located at Thonnakkal. These installations play a crucial role in ensuring a reliable and consistent supply as the network continues to expand, supporting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in Thiruvananthapuram and contributing to a greener future for the region.
