At a pivotal panel discussion titled 'Multi-Product Food Processing Technologies and Operations' during the Advantage Vidarbha event, experts unanimously declared food processing as the critical missing link between agricultural output and farmer prosperity. The consensus was clear: Vidarbha must urgently transition from being a mere raw material supplier to establishing itself as a dynamic, value-added processing hub.
Innovations in Alternative Proteins and Nutrition
Manohar Bhojwani, Director of Nagpur Dal Millers Cluster Pvt Ltd, showcased groundbreaking innovations that are set to redefine the food landscape. He highlighted the development of meat substitutes crafted from millets and other vegetarian raw materials, representing a significant leap in alternative protein sources.
"The future of food lies in sustainable, plant-based proteins, and Vidarbha possesses the fundamental raw material base to spearhead this transformative shift," Bhojwani asserted. He elaborated on scientific protein extraction techniques from pulses, emphasizing that such advanced technologies could simultaneously meet rising nutrition demands and unlock lucrative new markets for local farmers.

Dipen Agrawal, President of the Chamber of Associations of Maharashtra Industry and Trade (CAMIT), underscored the strategic importance of food processing within India's broader economic and employment framework. "Without the establishment of common processing facilities, robust cold chains, and more accessible financial mechanisms, growth in this vital sector will remain fragmented and inefficient," Agrawal warned. He identified regulatory simplification and the promotion of cluster-based development as immediate, actionable priorities to catalyze progress.

Vikram Shearon, Operations Director at the Imperial Tobacco Company of India (ITC), shifted focus to the ground-level operational hurdles. He stressed the imperative for stronger crop value addition directly at the source to enhance competitiveness.
Shearon noted that rapidly evolving consumer preferences are compelling companies to adapt their product portfolios, elevate quality benchmarks, and implement sophisticated traceability systems. "Value addition is no longer an optional strategy; it is an absolute essential for ensuring long-term sustainability and market relevance," he stated emphatically.
