Waltair Division Emerges as Top Performer in Indian Railways Freight Operations

In a remarkable achievement for Indian Railways, the Waltair Division based in Visakhapatnam has secured the top position for incremental freight earnings across the national network. The division recorded an exceptional increase of ₹1,220 crore over the previous fiscal year, showcasing its pivotal role in boosting railway revenues.

Record-Breaking Freight Performance and Financial Growth

During the Republic Day celebrations, Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra unfurled the national flag and highlighted that Waltair Division consistently ranks among the top five freight-earning divisions of Indian Railways. The division achieved a historic loading of 66.7 million tonnes, representing nearly 13% growth compared to its previous best performance. This growth rate is the highest among the top ten divisions in the country.

Goods earnings surged to ₹8,212 crore, reflecting an impressive growth of approximately 19%. Furthermore, the gross revenue crossed ₹9,147 crore, marking a 17.5% increase over the last year and exceeding the target by 12%. Notably, the division loaded over 61 million tonnes in just nine months, demonstrating efficient operational capabilities.

Expansion of Passenger Services and Infrastructure Development

Passenger services also experienced robust growth under the division's management. From April 1 of the previous year to the present date, Waltair Division operated 230 special trains, which included over 500 trips. Additionally, it handled 1,803 passing-through special trains and augmented more than 5,800 coaches to manage extra rush during peak travel periods.

Infrastructure upgradation progressed rapidly with the completion of 21 km of doubling works, 36 km of third line construction, and 43 km of automatic signalling installations. Electronic Interlocking systems were commissioned at six stations, and 162 Thick Web Switches were laid to enhance safety and efficiency. Traction infrastructure received a significant boost through sub-station upgrades at key locations including S Kota, Tyda, Gidam, Duvvada, and Simhachalam.

Operational Innovations and Sustainability Initiatives

Overall train examination capacity increased to 21.36 rakes per day in the fiscal year 2025-26. Operational innovations enabled the evacuation of two to three additional iron-ore rakes daily, as confirmed by the Divisional Railway Manager. On the sustainability front, Visakhapatnam station earned the prestigious Platinum Green Railway Station Certification, recognizing its environmental efforts.

Under the Net Zero Mission, the division commissioned over 1,800 kWp of solar capacity, resulting in energy savings exceeding ₹57 lakh. Plans are underway to double this solar capacity in the near future, further aligning with green energy goals. This comprehensive performance underscores Waltair Division's commitment to excellence in freight operations, passenger services, and sustainable development within Indian Railways.
