Panvel Junction Gets Relief as New 3.7-km Chord Line Approved at Rs 172 Crore
New Chord Line Approved to Ease Panvel Junction Congestion

In a major relief for Panvel Junction, the Central Railway has approved the construction of a 3.7-kilometer Somtane–Chikhli chord line at a cost of ₹172 crore. This new rail link will create a direct connection between Chikhli on the Karjat route and Somtane on the Roha route, bypassing the busy Panvel Junction.

Alternative Route to Reduce Dependence on Panvel Junction

Currently, trains traveling between the Karjat and Roha sections must pass through Panvel Junction. Railway officials stated that the new chord line will eliminate the need for these trains to enter the junction, thereby easing congestion.

Freight Trains to Avoid Engine Reversals

Freight trains operating between the Karjat, Jasai, and Roha corridors currently pass through Panvel and undergo engine reversals before proceeding. Once the chord line is operational, these freight services will be able to bypass the junction entirely, improving efficiency.

Improved Operational Efficiency

Railway officials noted that the chord line is expected to enhance operational efficiency by allowing trains to move directly between connected corridors. The project will also free up capacity at Panvel Junction, which handles traffic from multiple routes including Roha, JNPT, Karjat, and Diva.

Time Savings for Freight Services

Officials estimate that each freight train will save approximately 110 minutes of detention time after the chord line becomes operational. The reduction in stoppages and operational procedures is expected to improve overall turnaround time.

Direct Connection Between Two Corridors

The new chord line will connect Chikhli on the Karjat route with Somtane on the Roha route. This direct rail link will create a new connection between the two corridors, which are currently linked only through Panvel Junction.
