Historic Station Gets Modern Upgrade

Secunderabad Railway Station, a historic landmark that has served as the gateway to Hyderabad and Telangana for over 150 years, is undergoing a massive ₹715 crore redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project aims to transform the station into a world-class, modern transport hub capable of handling the rapid expansion of the twin cities.

A Century and a Half of Service

The station's history dates back to 1874 when the first railway line connecting Secunderabad to Wadi was opened. Built during the reign of the Nizams, it served as the vital link between Hyderabad State and the British Indian railway network. As Hyderabad and Secunderabad grew into major urban centers, the station expanded alongside them. Today, it handles approximately 200,000 passengers and over 200 trains daily.

Why Redevelopment Was Necessary

The original infrastructure was not designed for the current volume of traffic. Congested platforms, outdated facilities, and limited accessibility highlighted the need for a comprehensive overhaul rather than minor repairs. The redevelopment aims to ensure seamless passenger movement, improved accessibility, and integration with other local transport systems. Once completed, the upgraded station is expected to accommodate around 270,000 passengers daily, ensuring its functionality for decades.

Key Features of the New Station

The redevelopment includes new terminal buildings on the northern and southern sides, featuring spacious waiting areas, modern ticketing counters, retail outlets, and food courts. A double-level sky concourse spanning the tracks will allow passengers to move between platforms without congestion. New escalators, lifts, and travelators will enhance accessibility, especially for the elderly and those with heavy luggage. Sustainability measures include rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and sewage treatment plants.

Multimodal Connectivity

A crucial aspect of the project is transforming Secunderabad Station into a multimodal transport hub. Passengers will be able to seamlessly transfer between trains, the Hyderabad Metro, MMTS suburban lines, and city buses via dedicated skywalks and improved pedestrian pathways. This integration is vital for Hyderabad's growing economy and urban mobility.

Tourism and Local Economy Boost

The upgraded station will serve as an improved gateway for tourists visiting attractions such as the Secunderabad Clock Tower, Hussain Sagar Lake, Charminar, Golconda Fort, and Salar Jung Museum. The "One Station One Product" scheme will provide local artisans with retail space to sell traditional crafts and handlooms, offering visitors a taste of regional culture directly at the station.
