India's Exports Up 15% Despite US Tariffs, Global Woes

India's merchandise exports have grown approximately 15% during the period from April 1 to June 14, 2025, despite ongoing global economic uncertainties and higher US tariffs, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal announced on Sunday. This growth signals continued resilience in the country's outbound shipments.

Minister's Remarks at Mumbai Event

Speaking at an interaction with chartered accountants in Mumbai, Goyal stated that export growth has remained robust even as global trade faces multiple challenges. "Even now, if we see April, May and 14 days of June. I have data until June 14, it (exports growth) is 15 per cent," he said, as quoted by PTI.

The Commerce Ministry is scheduled to release official trade data for June on July 15, 2025.

Impact of US Tariffs

Goyal noted that India's exports in 2025-26 have continued to post healthy growth despite the imposition of 50% tariffs by the United States. The remarks come after India's exports rose 18% year-on-year to a six-month high of $45.2 billion in May. However, the country's trade deficit widened to $28.21 billion during the month.

April-May Trade Figures

During April-May 2025-26, exports increased 16.09% to $88.91 billion, while imports rose 15.14% to $145.35 billion. The trade deficit during the period stood at $56.44 billion.

Call to Chartered Accountants

Addressing the gathering, Goyal also called on chartered accountants to contribute towards the goal of making India a developed nation. "And where does Viksit Bharat begin? It begins in North Mumbai. We have to handle our own area first," he said.

Goyal, who represents Mumbai North in the Lok Sabha, said he has asked senior officials, including the municipal commissioner and local corporators, to launch a cleanliness campaign in the constituency from Monday. "We all have to make a collective effort for this. We keep our house clean, we also have to keep our area clean, keep our society clean, keep our kaarobaar (business) also clean," the minister added.
