CBSE Mandates Two Indian Languages in Class 6 from July 1

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new directive requiring all affiliated schools to introduce instruction in two Indian languages for students in Class 6, effective from July 1, 2026. This move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes multilingualism and the preservation of India's linguistic heritage.

Key Details of the Circular

In a circular dated May 4, 2026, CBSE instructed schools to finalize and upload their third language (R3) options on the Online Affiliated School Information System (OASIS) portal within the revised timeline. Schools are expected to offer at least two Indian languages as part of the curriculum, with the third language being an additional option.

Implementation Timeline

The new language policy will take effect from the academic session beginning July 1, 2026. Schools must ensure that they have the necessary infrastructure and teaching resources in place to comply with the mandate. The revised deadline for uploading language options on the OASIS portal has been set to allow schools adequate time for preparation.

Implications for Schools

CBSE has emphasized that schools must offer a choice of Indian languages to students, promoting linguistic diversity. Schools that currently teach only one Indian language will need to add at least one more. The board has also advised schools to consider regional languages and mother tongues while finalizing their language options.

Benefits for Students

This policy is expected to benefit students by enhancing cognitive abilities, cultural awareness, and career opportunities. Learning multiple Indian languages can also foster national integration and help students connect with their roots.

CBSE has urged schools to comply with the directive promptly to avoid any disruptions in the academic calendar. Further details regarding the implementation and assessment of the new language subjects are expected to be released soon.
