Assam Student Faces Brutal Hostel Assault at Madhya Pradesh University
A disturbing incident of violence has shaken the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Madhya Pradesh's Annupur district. Hirosh Jyoti Das, a student from Assam pursuing his Master's in Economics, was allegedly assaulted inside his hostel room by a group of fellow students.
The Terrifying Night Attack
According to police reports, the assault occurred in the early hours of January 13. Das described waking up at 3 am and going to the bathroom. When he returned to his room, he found a group of men had barged in without permission.
"I told them this was my room," Das recounted to authorities. The situation quickly escalated when the group began questioning his background.
"They asked me where I was from, and I replied Assam," Das stated. He noted he could smell alcohol on their breath and emphasized he had no prior disputes with any of the attackers.
Threats and Physical Violence
The confrontation turned violent when one of the assailants issued a chilling threat. "One of them said you will die here," Das alleged.
The attackers then physically assaulted him, binding his hands and attacking him with kicks and punches to his face. His roommate initially mistook the commotion for NCC preparation activities but quickly realized the gravity of the situation and attempted to intervene.
"My roommate tried to save me. I was bleeding from my mouth at the time," Das described the horrifying moment.
Immediate Aftermath and Medical Treatment
Following the assault, Das first sought medical attention at the university dispensary where his wounds were dressed. He was subsequently taken to the district hospital in Chhattisgarh's Gaurela for further treatment, as this facility was closer than the Annupur district hospital.
Gaurela police station in-charge Saurabh Singh confirmed receiving a memo from the district hospital about the incident. "We got a memo from the district hospital, where it was informed that two groups of college students fought at IGNTU," Singh stated, adding that the case is currently under investigation.
Campus Protests and University Response
News of the assault spread rapidly across the campus, triggering widespread protests among students demanding immediate action against the perpetrators.
The university administration responded swiftly. A spokesperson announced, "We have rusticated six students on the basis of CCTV footage. Immediate action was taken, the students were expelled from the university and the case has been forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee for investigation and disciplinary action."
The university has also filed a formal complaint with local police authorities for legal proceedings against those involved.
Police Investigation Progress
Annupur SP Motiur Rehman identified the victim and provided details about the ongoing investigation. "He was assaulted by a group of students who were in an inebriated condition," Rehman stated.
Police have filed a First Information Report against five students in connection with the assault, though no arrests have been made yet. The case documents and preliminary statements have been forwarded to Amarkantak police station in Annupur district for further investigation.
This incident has raised serious concerns about student safety in university hostels and highlighted the need for stronger security measures on educational campuses across the country.
