Kamala Nehru College of Delhi University held a special programme on Thursday to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The event took place on the college campus in New Delhi.
Distinguished Guests Attend Ceremony
Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh served as the chief guest for the occasion. He was joined by Dean of Colleges Prof Balaram Pani, Registrar Dr Vikas Gupta, and Chairperson of the college's Governing Body Prof Manoj Prasad.
Traditional Opening and Tributes
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of a lamp. The college's Indian Music Society presented a Saraswati Vandana. Attendees paid floral tributes to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the author of Vande Mataram. The gathering then heard a rendition of the Delhi University Kulgeet.
Principal Emphasizes Cultural Heritage
Principal Prof Pavitra Bhardwaj addressed the assembled crowd. She explained that the commemoration aimed to reflect India's rich cultural heritage. Bhardwaj also highlighted the continuing relevance of Vande Mataram in contemporary times.
The principal recalled the college's founding in 1964 with a focus on women's education. She stated that the institution remains dedicated to values of civic responsibility and inclusive nationalism.
Collective Singing and Historical Reflections
Students, faculty members, and staff later joined together for a collective singing of Vande Mataram. Prof Yogesh Singh then spoke about the historical journey of the song.
He detailed its role during various phases of India's national movement. Singh emphasized that the significance of Vande Mataram extends beyond mere recital. He urged everyone to translate its spirit into responsible action in daily life.
Remembering Freedom Fighters
The Vice-Chancellor referenced lesser-known figures from the freedom movement. He specifically mentioned Shyamji Krishna Verma. Singh stressed the importance of acknowledging such contributions to India's history.
He also connected national consciousness with modern challenges and responsibilities. The Vice-Chancellor particularly addressed these issues as they relate to today's youth.
Swadeshi Pledge and Closing Ceremonies
The programme included administration of the Swadeshi Sankalp Shapath. This oath reaffirmed commitment to national values and self-reliance.
Dr Pooja, the IQAC Coordinator, delivered a vote of thanks. The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. As part of the commemoration, organizers screened the film Anand Math for attendees.
