Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prioritizes Education and Health in State Budget
In a significant policy announcement, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has firmly pledged to protect education and health expenditures from any potential state budget cuts. Strategic Expansion of Higher Education Infrastructure
Speaking at a higher education reform conference in Shimla on Tuesday, Sukhu outlined a strategic pivot towards developing specialized academic institutions. A key highlight is the establishment of a new science college in Hamirpur, which has already received an initial allocation of ₹20 crore. To support this and other educational expansions, the state government is actively recruiting 800 new academic staff members, including 400 assistant professors, to strengthen faculty resources across institutions.
Launch of College Ranking System to Foster Excellence
In a bid to promote competition and recognize excellence, Chief Minister Sukhu introduced a new "league table" ranking system for government colleges in Himachal Pradesh. The inaugural rankings have been announced, with Hamirpur Government College securing the top position in Tier I. Bhoranj Government College emerged as the winner in Tier II, while Kaffota Government College claimed the Tier III title. Top-tier institutes were awarded ₹1 lakh each to acknowledge their outstanding performance and encourage continued improvement.
Focus on Employability Through Modern Courses
Sukhu also stressed the urgent need for modern vocational courses and language programs within the state's educational framework. These initiatives are designed to enhance student employability, particularly in the remote mountain regions of Himachal Pradesh, where job opportunities can be limited. By aligning education with market demands, the government aims to equip graduates with practical skills that boost their career prospects locally and beyond.
Digital Initiatives to Bridge Rural-Urban Divides
Simultaneously, the state has inaugurated new digital initiatives for colleges in Bilaspur and Dharamshala.
