Moga Bids Farewell to Its Beloved 2.9-Foot Math Teacher Gobind 'Veerji'

The town of Moga in Punjab is mourning the loss of a local legend, Gobind Lal, affectionately known as 'Gobind Veerji', who passed away at the age of 59. A mathematics teacher who stood just 2 feet and 9 inches tall and was confined to a wheelchair due to a medical condition from birth, Gobind taught for over 37 years without missing a single class, becoming a symbol of perseverance and inspiration.

A Life Defined by Teaching and Resilience

Gobind Veerji's journey as an educator began in Class X when he started tutoring his peers, helping them excel in mathematics. From that point, he never looked back, dedicating his life to teaching students from his home, where classes required advance booking due to high demand. Despite his physical limitations, including short limbs and reliance on a wheelchair, he never allowed his appearance to hinder his passion. In an interview with The Indian Express, he shared, "Not a single student or any other person ever made fun of my short appearance. My short hands and legs never discouraged me from taking classes."

His commitment was unwavering, even when doctors advised him to reduce his teaching hours to protect his health. "They even told me to stop teaching because it would hurt my back, but it was not possible. Teaching is my soul," he had said. Gobind viewed teaching as his reason for being, stating, "In teaching, I find a reason for being." He cherished his community in Moga, praising the town's people for their kindness and acceptance.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

Gobind faced numerous challenges throughout his life. When he applied for an undergraduate course, colleges expressed concerns about his ability to perform physics and chemistry practicals, suggesting he pursue a BA in Arts instead. Undeterred, he opted out of traditional college and earned a BA in Mathematics through correspondence from Panjab University, driven by a desire to prove that "nothing is impossible."

To adapt to his needs, he created a special vehicle suited to his height, ensuring independence in mobility. He also embraced technology, using LED screens and tablets to prepare notes for his students. At his peak, he taught 60-70 students daily, considering them family. His younger brother, Sunil Kumar Kukreja, recalled, "Teacher’s Day would feel like a festival at our home. His old students would visit with greeting cards, cakes, and flowers. That’s what he earned."

Health Struggles and Legacy

In recent months, Gobind's health declined. He suffered a heart attack about six months ago, and due to his unique body structure, doctors deemed surgery impossible, relying instead on medication. Last week, he experienced another heart attack and was admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where he passed away late on Monday due to heart failure.

Kukreja expressed the family's pride in Gobind's achievements, saying, "His void will never be filled, but we are proud of him because, despite the challenges he faced since his birth, he lived a life that became immortal. He will live in the hearts of his students forever."

Inspiring Generations of Students

Gobind's impact extended far beyond the classroom. Rina Singla, a former student who is now a mathematics teacher with the Punjab Education Department, shared how he inspired her. "I had joined his classes in Class XI after scoring very poorly in maths, but he encouraged me not to give up. For students like me, he was a big inspiration. He is the inspiration behind my decision to be a maths teacher," she said. She highlighted his confidence and vitality, noting that he was always full of life despite his physical constraints.

Gobind Veerji's story is a testament to the power of resilience and dedication. He lived a life that, in the words of his brother, was "taller than his physical stature," leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire the community of Moga and beyond. His passing marks the end of an era, but his teachings and spirit will endure in the hearts of those he touched.
