Punjab 2025 Floods Included as Case Study in NCERT Class 9 Textbook

The catastrophic floods that struck Punjab in 2025 have been incorporated as a case study in the newly released Class 9 NCERT social science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Grade 9 Part 1. This inclusion is designed to help students grasp the impact of natural disasters and the principles of disaster management through real-life examples, according to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

Worksheet-Based Approach to Disaster Education

The textbook features a dedicated section on disasters that employs a worksheet-based model, encouraging students to learn through personal experiences and independent research. The book states, “A section on disasters has been developed in a way which utilises the textbook as a worksheet model. In this section, students can write about disasters through their own experiences/searching through the net.” This interactive approach aims to enhance engagement and understanding of disaster preparedness and response.

Details of the 2025 Punjab Floods

The textbook highlights that the severe floods resulted from heavy monsoon rainfall and the swelling of the Satluj, Beas, and Ravi rivers. The disaster caused extensive damage across Punjab, affecting numerous villages, agricultural lands, residential areas, and critical infrastructure. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes and seek shelter in relief camps. Vast stretches of farmland were submerged, severely impacting crops, particularly paddy. Additionally, poultry and dairy farms suffered heavy losses, with many animals, including cows, buffaloes, and chickens, either perishing or falling ill. Roads, bridges, border fences, and several public buildings were also damaged during the floods.

Multilingual Learning and Classroom Activities

In addition to disaster awareness, NCERT has emphasized multilingual learning through classroom activities. As part of an interactive exercise, students are asked to translate a disaster management authority poster into their native language. This activity aims to reinforce language skills while promoting disaster preparedness.

Integration of Contemporary Issues in Curriculum

The newly introduced textbook covers subjects including history, geography, and political science, while integrating contemporary issues and experiential learning methods to enhance student engagement. By using a real-world disaster like the Punjab floods, NCERT aims to make learning more relevant and impactful, helping students understand the socio-economic and environmental consequences of natural calamities.
