Gujarat Assembly Discloses Closure of 75 Government Primary Schools

In a significant revelation to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Thursday, the state government confirmed the shutdown of seventy-five government primary schools over the past two years. The official statement, delivered in response to queries from AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava, attributed the closures primarily to a severe decline in student enrollment, with some institutions reporting zero attendance.

Alternative Arrangements for Displaced Students

The government's written reply elaborated on the measures taken to ensure continuity of education for affected students. Arrangements have been made for these students to enroll in nearby schools, with the state providing necessary transportation facilities to facilitate their commute. This policy aims to mitigate disruptions in learning despite the consolidation of educational infrastructure.

Over 2,600 Government Schools Operating in Shifts

In a related disclosure, the assembly was informed that a staggering 2,674 government schools are currently operating in shifts. The government cited ongoing construction activities as the primary reason for this temporary measure. Work is underway to dismantle dilapidated classrooms in some schools, while new structures are being built in others, necessitating the shift system to maintain educational services without interruption.

Financial Support for Natural Farming Adopters

Separately, the Gujarat government announced a financial initiative to promote sustainable agriculture. On Thursday, an amount of Rs 6.97 crore was transferred via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the bank accounts of farmers who have newly adopted natural farming practices. This assistance, provided under the National Mission on Natural Farming, offers Rs 2,000 per acre to support the transition. A total of 35,829 farmers benefited from this disbursement, according to an official statement.

The assembly session highlighted the state's efforts to streamline educational resources while simultaneously investing in agricultural innovation, reflecting a dual focus on social and economic development.
