Serious Ragging Incident Rocks Bengaluru College, 23 Senior Students Booked
A disturbing case of ragging has emerged from a college in Devanahalli town, located in Bengaluru Rural district, prompting Karnataka police to take swift action. Authorities have filed a formal complaint against 23 senior students for allegedly subjecting first-year students to severe harassment and physical assault.
Violent Harassment and Physical Assault Detailed
According to the Devanahalli Police investigation, senior students at the college allegedly engaged in continuous ragging of first-year BBA and BCA students over several days. The complaint reveals that the seniors forced the junior students to bring alcohol and cigarettes and subjected them to humiliating punishments, including making them stand for hours while holding their textbooks.
The situation escalated dramatically when distressed junior students approached college management to report the ongoing harassment. When the college's Admin Head, Midun Madhavan, went to investigate the allegations, he was reportedly attacked by a group of senior students, adding another layer of violence to the already serious incident.
Weapons Used and Valuables Stolen During Assault
Police reports indicate that the accused seniors didn't limit their harassment to psychological torment. During the incident, they allegedly assaulted junior students with dangerous weapons including iron rods, stones, and wooden sticks. The violence reached such extremes that authorities have included attempted murder charges in their case.
Adding to the criminal nature of the incident, the seniors reportedly snatched a gold chain belonging to one of the victimized students, further demonstrating the severity of their actions.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
A formal case has been registered at the Devanahalli Police Station under multiple serious charges:
- Ragging under relevant educational institution regulations
- Attempted murder given the violent nature of the assaults
- Criminal intimidation for threatening behavior toward victims
Following the complaint, police have already arrested three students identified as Bilal, Zhiril, and Mishal. Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing the remaining 20 accused students who are currently evading arrest.
The investigation continues as police gather additional evidence and statements from all involved parties. This incident highlights the persistent problem of ragging in educational institutions despite strict regulations and legal provisions against such behavior.
College authorities and police officials are coordinating to ensure the safety of all students while the legal process unfolds. The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance against ragging practices in educational environments across Karnataka.
