CBSE Cancels Class XII Board Examinations Across West Asia Amid Regional Conflict

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced on Sunday the cancellation of its Class XII board examinations scheduled in several West Asian countries. This decision follows a comprehensive review of the feasibility of conducting exams in a region severely impacted by ongoing military conflicts and instability.

Widespread Impact on Students and Schools

The cancellation affects approximately 20,000 students across about 200 schools affiliated with CBSE in Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. These examinations had been scheduled to take place between March 16 and April 10, 2024.

The Board stated that the decision was made after carefully reviewing inputs and requests received from school authorities and government officials in the affected countries. CBSE subsequently communicated this cancellation directly to the principals of all impacted schools through official correspondence.

Formal Cancellation of Postponed Examinations

In its official communication, CBSE clarified: "The examinations, which were earlier postponed vide circular dated March 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9, shall also stand cancelled." This formal declaration puts to rest any uncertainty regarding the status of these repeatedly postponed assessments.

Alternative Assessment Methodology

CBSE has confirmed that the process for declaring results for affected Class XII candidates will be announced separately. The Board indicated that alternative evaluation methods will be implemented to assign final marks for this academic session, with detailed guidelines to be communicated in due course.

While the specific formula remains to be officially confirmed, educational experts suggest the assessment will likely incorporate multiple components of students' academic performance throughout the year, including:

  • Internal school evaluations and teacher assessments
  • Marks from periodic tests and unit examinations
  • Pre-board examination results
  • Practical work and project assessments
  • Overall academic performance documented by schools

This comprehensive approach would provide a fair and balanced evaluation for the approximately 20,000 students affected by the cancellation.

Board's Commitment to Student Welfare

CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj emphasized the Board's commitment to student welfare, stating: "We handle everything for the children. Whatever initiatives we take, we always ensure that everything runs smoothly, and people can work comfortably. Their health and happiness are taken care of."

This cancellation represents the latest in a series of disruptions to the examination schedule in the region. CBSE had previously postponed Class X and XII board examinations scheduled for March 2, March 5, and March 6 in these seven countries before ultimately deciding on complete cancellation.

The decision reflects the Board's recognition of the extraordinary circumstances created by regional conflicts and its commitment to ensuring student safety while maintaining academic integrity through alternative assessment mechanisms.
