CBSE to Reintroduce On-Screen Marking for Class 12 Board Exams from 2026
CBSE Reintroduces On-Screen Marking for Class 12 from 2026

CBSE Announces Major Shift to Digital Evaluation for Class 12 Board Exams

In a landmark decision aimed at modernizing India's education assessment system, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the reintroduction of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 Board examinations, effective from the 2026 academic session. This strategic move represents a significant technological upgrade in evaluation methodology, designed to substantially enhance efficiency, transparency, and accuracy throughout the assessment process.

What is On-Screen Marking and How Will It Work?

On-Screen Marking is an advanced digital evaluation system where scanned copies of students' handwritten answer sheets are securely uploaded and displayed on computer screens for teachers to assess. Instead of traditional physical paper checking, evaluators will mark answers digitally using specialized software that automatically calculates totals, thereby completely eliminating manual totalling errors that have historically affected result accuracy.

The Board clarified in a detailed circular dated February 9, addressed to principals and heads of all CBSE-affiliated schools worldwide, that while Class 12 answer books will transition to this digital system from 2026, Class 10 evaluations will continue in physical mode for the time being. This phased approach allows for systematic implementation and infrastructure development.

Key Benefits and Advantages of the New System

CBSE has outlined multiple compelling advantages expected from the OSM implementation:

  • Elimination of Totalling Errors: Automated calculation removes human error in mark summation.
  • Reduced Manual Intervention: Automated coordination streamlines the entire evaluation workflow.
  • Faster Evaluation Process: Digital marking accelerates assessment timelines significantly.
  • Wider Teacher Participation: Enables involvement of qualified teachers from all affiliated schools globally.
  • Convenience and Cost Savings: Teachers can evaluate from their own schools, saving transportation time and expenses.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Reduces paper usage and physical logistics, lowering the carbon footprint.
  • Post-Result Verification: Digital accuracy means "post-result verification of marks will no longer be required" according to the circular.

Examination Scale and Implementation Timeline

The CBSE board examinations for 2026 are scheduled to run from February 17 to April 10, catering to students from over 31,000 affiliated schools across India and 26 countries abroad. Approximately 46 lakh (4.6 million) students are expected to appear for these crucial examinations at more than 8,074 centers worldwide.

This massive scale underscores the importance of implementing a robust, efficient evaluation system that can handle such volume while maintaining integrity and timeliness.

Infrastructure Requirements and Transition Support

To ensure seamless adoption, CBSE has mandated specific infrastructure readiness from all participating schools:

  1. Computer lab equipped with a public static IP address
  2. Computers or laptops running Windows 8 or higher with minimum 4 GB RAM
  3. At least 1 GB free space on the C drive
  4. Updated web browsers and Adobe Reader software
  5. Reliable internet connectivity of minimum 2 Mbps speed
  6. Uninterrupted power supply with backup systems

The Board has committed to comprehensive support during this transition period. Teachers with existing OASIS IDs will be able to access the system for familiarization, with multiple dry runs planned before actual implementation. CBSE will organize extensive training programs, establish a dedicated call center for technical issue resolution, and release instructional videos to guide all stakeholders.

"Detailed instructions for each activity will be issued separately to ensure timely action by all stakeholders," the circular emphasized, highlighting the systematic approach to this educational technology transformation.

Broader Implications for Educational Assessment

This move represents more than just a technical upgrade—it signals a fundamental shift toward digital transformation in Indian education assessment. By enabling teachers from CBSE's global network of schools in India and 26 countries to participate in evaluation, the system democratizes the assessment process while potentially improving quality through broader expertise.

The reintroduction of OSM (previously attempted on a limited scale) now comes with enhanced technological capabilities and infrastructure support, positioning CBSE at the forefront of digital assessment innovation among educational boards in India and internationally.
