Gujarat to Introduce Vocational Education in Private Schools from 2026-27

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has made a significant decision to roll out vocational education in private schools across the state, starting from the academic year 2026–27. This initiative will be implemented on a self-financed basis, marking a major expansion of skill-based learning in Gujarat's educational landscape.

Alignment with National Education Policy 2020

This strategic move is in direct alignment with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the integration of vocational and skill-based learning into the mainstream education system. The NEP aims to equip students with practical skills from an early stage, preparing them for future careers and reducing the gap between education and employment.

Currently, vocational education schemes are primarily operational in government and grant-in-aid schools. However, the board is now planning to extend this program to approximately 5,700 private schools statewide, significantly broadening its reach and impact.

Key Sectors and Implementation Guidelines

The GSHSEB has identified 16 vocational sectors for inclusion in this program. These sectors encompass a diverse range of fields, including:

  • Agriculture
  • Information Technology
  • Healthcare
  • And several other industry-relevant areas

To ensure effective implementation, the board has issued comprehensive guidelines covering laboratory setup and the appointment of vocational trainers. Schools interested in offering vocational subjects must complete the nomination process and submit the required documentation by April 20.

Infrastructure and Staffing Requirements

According to the guidelines, schools offering vocational subjects must establish a separate laboratory on their campus. This laboratory must have adequate space and facilities to accommodate at least 20 students simultaneously, ensuring hands-on learning experiences.

Additionally, schools will be required to appoint qualified vocational trainers. The remuneration for these trainers will be the responsibility of the school management, underlining the self-financed nature of the initiative.

Curriculum Structure and Practical Exposure

In terms of curriculum integration, vocational subjects will be offered as an alternative to the third language in Class 10. For Classes 11 and 12, these subjects will be included as main subjects, providing students with a focused pathway in vocational education.

To enhance practical exposure, students will be required to undertake three field visits each academic year. Furthermore, an 80-hour internship is compulsory at the higher secondary level, allowing students to gain real-world experience in their chosen vocational fields.

Evaluation System and Approval Process

The evaluation system for vocational subjects will be structured as follows:

  1. 30 marks for theory examinations
  2. 50 marks for practical exams
  3. 20 marks for internal assessment

This comprehensive assessment approach ensures that both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are adequately evaluated.

Approval for starting vocational courses will be granted at the district education officer (DEO) level. Only schools that meet all the required criteria, including infrastructure and staffing standards, will receive permission to offer these programs.

This initiative represents a transformative step in Gujarat's education system, aiming to create a skilled workforce and align student learning with industry demands. By integrating vocational education into private schools, the GSHSEB is fostering a more inclusive and practical approach to education across the state.
