Kerala Announces Significant Syllabus Reduction for Class 10 Students
In a significant move to address growing concerns about academic pressure, the Kerala government has announced a substantial reduction in the Class 10 syllabus. Education Minister V Sivankutty revealed on Saturday that textbooks for the next academic year will contain 25% less content compared to current materials.
Addressing Student Concerns About Academic Burden
The decision comes in response to persistent complaints from students about the heavy academic workload they face in their school curriculum. Minister Sivankutty emphasized that the state government has been actively listening to student feedback and has taken this necessary step to create a more balanced learning environment.
"In next year's school textbooks, 25 per cent of the syllabus will be reduced from what exists in the current books. The curriculum committee has already approved the decision," Sivankutty stated during his address to students.
Clarification on Textbook Content
The minister clarified an important aspect of the syllabus reduction, noting that while the overall volume of content will decrease, the essential quality and structure of the textbooks will remain unchanged. This approach ensures that students continue to receive comprehensive education while experiencing reduced academic pressure.
Announcement During Emotional Ceremony
The syllabus reduction announcement came during an emotional ceremony where Minister Sivankutty, along with Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal, handed over keys to a newly constructed house for the family of Mithun, a student who tragically died after being electrocuted at Thevalakkara Boys High School last year.
Sivankutty shared on Facebook earlier in the day that Mithun had dreamed of a proper house for his family and had even sketched his dream home on the walls of their modest dwelling. "Today, that dream stands fulfilled with the completion of a new house named 'Mithun Bhavanam', though the absence of the child continues to cause deep sorrow," the minister expressed.
Community Effort in Fulfilling Student's Dream
The construction of the 1,000-square-foot house, completed within six months at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, was undertaken by the Kerala State Bharat Scouts and Guides without collecting any funds from students. Sivankutty praised this initiative as a model of humane intervention that demonstrates community responsibility toward children and their aspirations.
"The house stands as a tribute to the boy's memories and a reminder of our collective responsibility towards children and their dreams," Sivankutty added, connecting the emotional ceremony with the broader educational reforms being implemented.
