Punjab Government Schools Host Parent Workshop 2.0 Amid Exam Season

Government schools across Punjab, with a notable focus in Ludhiana, organized a comprehensive parents' workshop on Saturday. The event, dubbed Parent Workshop 2.0, centered on the theme 'Exam Preparation: A Joint Responsibility'. This initiative aimed to foster collaboration between educators and families as students gear up for upcoming examinations.

Workshop Objectives and Key Discussions

The workshop delved into several critical areas to enhance student performance and well-being. Key topics included:

  • The pivotal role of parents in creating a supportive home environment conducive to studying.
  • Strategies to boost students' self-confidence and reduce exam-related anxiety.
  • Guidance on the admission process for higher education or subsequent academic levels.
  • Early intervention and prevention measures against drug usage among school-going children.

Authorities emphasized that exam preparation is a shared duty, requiring active involvement from both schools and families to ensure student success.

Scheduling Conflicts Disrupt Daily Academic Routines

Despite careful planning, the workshop's implementation faced significant logistical challenges. The event was scheduled from morning until 2:30 PM, overlapping with the regular academic timetable. This dual scheduling placed immense pressure on teachers, who struggled to balance classroom instruction with workshop responsibilities.

A government school teacher, speaking anonymously, highlighted the difficulties: "I was teaching my class when I learned parents were waiting for the workshop. I had to leave my students temporarily, and another teacher had to adjust their period to cover for me. Managing both tasks simultaneously was quite challenging."

Another educator added, "The academic schedule was inevitably affected. With students in classrooms and parents on campus, we had to juggle both priorities. Given the approaching exams, we also need to address student concerns, which complicates matters further."

Parental Inconvenience and Work-Life Balance Issues

The workshop also posed hardships for parents, many of whom are employed and found it difficult to attend during working hours. Notifications from school authorities mandated participation, forcing parents to take time off from their jobs.

One parent, who works as a hospital sweeper, shared, "I received a notification from my daughter's school last night and had to arrive in the afternoon. It was very tough to leave my job during work hours."

Another parent, a laborer, expressed frustration: "Similar issues were discussed in a recent mega PTM. I dropped my son off in the morning and now had to return for the workshop. I attended during my lunch break because the school insisted it was important."

Mandatory Participation and Future Rescheduling Plans

School directives required 100% parent participation. If full attendance was not achieved by February 7, schools were instructed to reschedule another workshop on February 9. This mandate added to the pressure on both parents and teachers.

Many stakeholders voiced concerns about the timing, noting that this period is crucial for exam preparation, with practical exams already underway. Suggestions were made to postpone such workshops until after final exams to minimize disruption to studies.

The Parent Workshop 2.0, while well-intentioned in promoting collaborative exam preparation, underscored the need for better logistical planning to avoid conflicts with academic schedules and parental work commitments.
