In a remarkable fusion of tradition and sport, Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya in Varanasi commemorated its 82nd foundation day on Tuesday with a distinctive cricket tournament. The event, held at the Jaynarayan Inter College ground in Ramapura, featured a 10-over match where players showcased their skills while adorned in traditional dhoti-kurta and marked with 'tilak-tripund', creating a visually striking cultural spectacle.
A Sanskrit Commentary Extravaganza Praised by PM Modi
This annual gathering for students of Vedic knowledge was distinguished by its complete Sanskrit commentary, a feature that has earned praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann ki Baat broadcast. The commentary was expertly delivered by grammar scholar Sheshnarayan Mishra and Vedic Acharya Vikas Dixit, adding an educational and traditional layer to the sporting competition.
Four Teams Compete in Spirit of Cultural Pride
The tournament saw participation from four dedicated teams:
- Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya
- International Chandramauli Charitable Trust
- Swami Vedanti Ved Vidyapeeth
- Chidanand Sanskrit Vidyalaya Varanasi
The event was inaugurated by Ganesh Dutt Shastri, a President Award recipient and former principal, who emphasized the broader mission. "The objective was to highlight that Sanskrit students are not merely future priests for performing rituals, but can showcase their talent in sports too," he stated, challenging stereotypes about traditional education.
Educational and Sporting Excellence on Display
District Inspector of Schools Bholendra Pratap Singh noted that such events develop children's ability to progress with enthusiasm, blending academic rigor with physical activity. Programme coordinator and college principal Pawan Kumar Shukla organized the cricket tournament to foster both competitive spirit and cultural awareness among participants.
The match was officiated by former Ranji Trophy-level players Dheeraj Mishra and Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari as umpires, with Ashok Pandey serving as match referee, ensuring professional standards were maintained throughout the games.

As the matches commenced, the ground resonated with energetic victory chants of "Jayatu-Jayatu Bharatam, Jayatu-Jayatu Sanskritam," reflecting national and linguistic pride. - The first match saw Swami Vedanti Ved Vidyapeeth triumph over International Chandramauli Charitable Trust by eight wickets.
- In the second match, Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya scored 77 runs batting first, while Chidanand Sanskrit Vidyalaya managed 65 runs in eight overs, leading to their elimination.
- The final match featured Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya and Swami Vedanti Ved Vidyapeeth. Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya set a target of 61 runs in eight overs, but Swami Vedanti Ved Vidyapeeth chased it down in the fifth over with 64 runs, losing only three wickets to claim victory, making Shastrarth Mahavidyalaya the runner-up.
