TN TET Witnesses Dramatic Surge in Pass Rates with Simplified Papers and Relaxed Criteria

In a remarkable development for teacher recruitment in Tamil Nadu, the number of candidates clearing the Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TN TET) has skyrocketed by four times this year compared to the previous examination. This significant increase is primarily attributed to the introduction of easier question papers and a relaxation in qualifying marks for various social categories.

Staggering Statistics Reveal Unprecedented Success

According to official data released by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), an impressive 1,50,703 candidates successfully cleared the test out of the 4,24,317 aspirants who appeared for both papers. This marks a dramatic leap from the 36,973 candidates who had qualified in the previous test conducted back in 2022.

Breaking down the performance by paper, the results show:

  • Paper I: Out of 92,417 candidates, 45,469 cleared the test, achieving a pass percentage of 49%.
  • Paper II: From 3,31,900 candidates, 1,04,604 were successful, resulting in a pass percentage of 32%.

Key Factors Behind the Remarkable Improvement

Multiple factors have contributed to this unprecedented surge in pass rates. Candidates reported that the questions were drawn directly from Class I to Class XII textbooks for both papers, making the examination more accessible. One candidate specifically noted, "Particularly, Paper I for the secondary grade teachers was very easy, which helped a majority of candidates clear it."

Additionally, TRB sources confirmed that the relaxation of qualifying marks played a crucial role in boosting results this year. The state government implemented the following changes:

  1. For candidates from Most Backward Classes (MBCs) and Backward Classes (BCs), the qualifying marks were reduced from 55% to 50%, requiring only 75 marks out of 150 to pass.
  2. For Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and SC(A) candidates, the pass percentage was lowered from 55% to 40%, meaning they needed just 60 marks out of 150 to qualify.

Supreme Court Order Adds Urgency to Teacher Certification

These results gain particular significance in light of the Supreme Court's recent order mandating all in-service teachers to clear the TET within a two-year timeframe. This directive is expected to impact nearly two lakh teachers employed in government-aided and private schools across Tamil Nadu.

P Patric Rhymond, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers Federation, has urged the state government to expedite the process by conducting special TET exams for in-service teachers without further delay. He emphasized, "The state government decided to conduct three TET exams. TRB should issue a notification to conduct the first special TET. The government also should consider reducing the qualifying marks for general category candidates as well."

Next Steps for Qualified Candidates

Successful candidates can download their e-certificates from the official TRB website, www.trb.tn.gov.in, starting from February 2. This development represents a significant step forward in addressing teacher certification requirements while accommodating diverse candidate backgrounds through adjusted qualifying criteria.
