Village Unites to Sponsor Wedding of Beloved Guest Teacher, Creating Unique Social Awareness Event

In a remarkable demonstration of community solidarity and respect for educators, the residents of Bahadurbandi village in Koppal district came together to sponsor the wedding of Hanumantappa Kabber, a guest teacher at the local government model higher primary school. The event, held on Sunday, was not just a celebration of marriage but was ingeniously transformed into a platform for raising awareness on critical social issues such as voting, education, and women's empowerment.

Community Initiative to Support a Dedicated Educator

Guest teachers in the state have long been working with meagre remuneration and without job security, their demands often going unfulfilled by the government. However, in Bahadurbandi, the villagers decided to take matters into their own hands to honor Kabber, who has been a student-friendly teacher for five years, even guiding pupils after their schooling. Recognizing his dedication, the community organized a crowdfunding effort to cover his wedding expenses, turning the ceremony into a unique social initiative.

Beerappa Andagi, the former headmaster of the school, explained that discussions among schoolteachers, School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) members, and the gram panchayat president began 15 days prior to plan the event. "Kabber is a teacher who is good with the staff, students, and villagers. Seeing his dedication towards students, we decided to make craft works with slogans on awareness topics like voting, education, girl child education, child marriage, and blood donation," he said. The organizers opted for a distinctive approach, omitting the bride and groom's names from the stage banner to present it as a special marriage and replacing movie songs with awareness songs penned by teachers Hanumantappa Kuri and Mahiboob Killedar.

Financial and Logistical Support from the Village

The funding for the wedding was mobilized through collective efforts. Local teachers contributed Rs 8,000, while SDMC members covered stage expenses. Additional financial support came from teachers working in other villages, including Devappa Ontigar, Hanumantappa Kuri, Sharabasanagouda Patil, and Ramesh Buddanagoudar. Kabber's family handled the expenses for ceremonies at his home, ensuring a shared responsibility.

Gram panchayat president Yoganand Lebageri highlighted Kabber's personal background, noting that he was born and raised in the village but lost his parents long ago and lives with his brother. "He is a very caring teacher for students. We sponsored sweets for the marriage, and many more pledged their support. As of now, no proper account is available since other villagers and teachers are coming forward to bear other expenses," he stated, underscoring the widespread community involvement.

Transforming a Wedding into a Social Movement

Manjunath Kuri, a past SDMC president, emphasized the broader significance of the initiative. "Since Kabber was putting sincere efforts into the educational growth of students, everyone worked for the success of his wedding. Through this, we showed that there is high respect for good teachers in society. Moreover, we feel that it is a virtuous initiative," he shared. The event served as a powerful statement on the value of education and community support, resonating beyond the village boundaries.

For Kabber, who earns a monthly remuneration of Rs 12,000, the wedding expenses were a source of worry. "However, SDMC members, the GP president, teachers, and others reduced my financial burden by sponsoring lunch, the stage, and other expenses. I am thankful to everyone for this support, and I will repay this by teaching students with more enthusiasm," he added, expressing gratitude and renewed commitment to his profession.

This heartwarming story from Bahadurbandi village not only highlights the challenges faced by guest teachers but also showcases how community action can turn personal milestones into opportunities for social change, fostering a culture of respect and empowerment.
