WB SSC Non-Teaching Exams in March: 16 Lakh Applicants

West Bengal SSC Announces March Schedule for Non-Teaching Staff Recruitment Exams

The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has officially confirmed the schedule for written examinations to recruit non-teaching staff in state-run and state-aided schools. In a significant development ahead of the Assembly elections, the Commission will conduct these crucial tests on March 1 and March 8, 2026, marking a major step in filling thousands of vacant positions across educational institutions.

Examination Dates and Application Statistics

According to official statements released on Thursday, the written examination for Group-C posts is scheduled for March 1, while Group-D candidates will appear for their tests on March 8. The recruitment drive has generated tremendous response from job seekers across the state, with approximately 16 lakh candidates submitting applications for these positions.

The breakdown of applications reveals:

  • Group-C Posts: Approximately 8.13 lakh applicants
  • Group-D Posts: Approximately 8.20 lakh applicants

This overwhelming response highlights the intense competition for government jobs in West Bengal's education sector.

Vacancy Details and Examination Structure

The WBSSC recruitment drive aims to fill a total of 8,477 vacancies across both categories. Specific vacancy numbers include:

  1. Group-C Positions: 2,989 vacancies
  2. Group-D Positions: 5,488 vacancies

The examination structure has been clearly defined by the Commission:

  • Group-C Written Test: 60 marks
  • Group-D Written Test: 40 marks

These tests will be conducted across over 1,500 examination centers throughout West Bengal, ensuring widespread accessibility for candidates from all regions.

Important Eligibility Restrictions

In a significant clarification, the WBSSC has explicitly stated that "tainted" non-teaching staff will not be permitted to participate in these examinations. This restriction applies specifically to individuals whose jobs were invalidated by the Supreme Court order dated April 3, 2025.

The Commission has already published a comprehensive list of 3,512 candidates deemed ineligible under this provision:

  • Group-C: 1,363 tainted candidates
  • Group-D: 2,349 tainted candidates

This measure ensures that only eligible candidates with clean records can compete for these positions, maintaining the integrity of the recruitment process.

Administrative Approval and Implementation

The School Education Department received formal approval from the state secretariat 'Nabanna' to proceed with the examination process. Following this green signal, the WBSSC has begun uploading official notices and examination details for public access.

This recruitment initiative represents one of the largest government job drives in West Bengal's recent history, with the potential to significantly impact the state's education infrastructure by filling critical non-teaching positions in schools across the region.
