Students and staff at the Professional Studies Institute of Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) in Daltonganj are grappling with an unusual and persistent problem that greets them daily: an overwhelming presence of pigeons and their droppings across the campus.
Health Hazards and Hygiene Crisis
The three-storey institute, which was established a little over one and a half years ago, has become a favoured roosting spot for numerous pigeons. Every morning, the campus is littered with bird excrement, creating filthy conditions. A doctor from the local MMCH highlighted the serious health implications, stating that pigeon droppings carry harmful fungi and bacteria and can lead to respiratory infections among those exposed.
Health experts have pointed out a significant challenge in the cleanup process. The staff tasked with sanitising the premises often have to work without essential protective gear like gloves and masks, increasing their risk of contracting diseases.
Administration's Struggle and Response
University Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Kumar Singh, who was instrumental in consolidating various professional courses under one roof for effective monitoring, acknowledged the issue. He admitted that despite the constant footfall of students, the pigeons have stubbornly refused to vacate their dwellings within the institute building.
Echoing the difficulty, S K Pandey, the dean of student welfare, described keeping all three floors free from droppings as an arduous task, noting that cleaning crews are in a constant battle against the mess.
Planned Measures to Deter the Birds
When asked about solutions, VC Dinesh Kumar Singh outlined the steps being taken. The university has instructed the builders to plug open spaces and create slopes to make the areas less inviting to pigeons. Additionally, the administration is considering installing nets across open spaces to physically prevent the birds from entering and settling on the campus.
The situation underscores a growing concern for campus hygiene and student welfare at the institute, as authorities work to find a permanent fix to this feathered nuisance.
