Ranveer Singh Submits Apology Affidavit in Karnataka High Court Over Rishab Shetty Mimicry Controversy

While Ranveer Singh continues to bask in the success of his latest film 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge', a legal controversy surrounding his mimicry of actor Rishab Shetty has taken a significant new turn. The actor has informed the Karnataka High Court that he is prepared to submit an apology affidavit regarding the incident, which involved the depiction of Chamundi Devi.

Legal Proceedings and Apology Affidavit Details

After the initial affidavit was submitted, the complainant, Prashanth Methal, raised objections, arguing that the apology lacked sincerity. Methal pointed out that Rishab Shetty had already signaled Ranveer Singh to stop during the event, adding weight to his concerns.

According to reports from Bar and Bench, Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Ranveer Singh, informed Justice M Nagaprasanna that a new affidavit would be filed. Poovayya agreed to consult with Methal to refine the wording of the affidavit and submit a revised version before the court.

Ranveer Singh's Expression of Regret

The actor has expressed deep regret over his actions, stating that he did not realize at the time that his remarks could hurt religious sentiments. Reading from the existing affidavit, Poovayya conveyed Ranveer's position:

"I have filed an affidavit of apology. And I have undertaken in that affidavit that I will visit the temple as well. On the date of the incident, even for a moment, I did not realize I offended the worshippers of the Daiva. I also want to clarify, I was raised in a Sindhi household in Mumbai and I was not aware of the sensitivities. I, through this affidavit, once again convey my deepest regret, and unconditional apology. I will be visiting the temple of the deity in due course to offer my prayers and express my devotion."

Court's Response and Background of the Controversy

Justice Nagaprasanna acknowledged the submissions and adjourned the matter to April 23 for further proceedings. The controversy originated on November 28 last year during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). While praising Rishab Shetty's performance in 'Kantara: Chapter 1', Ranveer Singh mimicked him on stage.

Despite Rishab Shetty requesting him to stop, Ranveer repeated the act, including while greeting and hugging him. This sequence of events has led to the current legal scrutiny and public debate.

Previous Public Apology and Broader Context

Ranveer Singh had earlier issued a public apology, stating: "My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise."

This case highlights the delicate balance between artistic expression and cultural sensitivity in the entertainment industry. As the legal process unfolds, it continues to draw attention to issues of religious respect and public behavior among celebrities.
