Yami Gautam has been approached to headline the third part of the popular Kahaani franchise, with director Sujoy Ghosh reportedly developing the project. According to sources close to the development, the film is expected to go on floors by early 2027.
Revival of a Beloved Franchise
The Kahaani series, which originally starred Vidya Balan, gained critical acclaim for its gripping narrative and strong female leads. The first film released in 2012 and the sequel in 2016, both directed by Sujoy Ghosh. Now, after a long hiatus, Ghosh is bringing back the franchise with a new story.
“Sujoy has been working on the script for a while and is keen to start production next year. Yami has been finalized for the lead role, and the team is confident about her ability to carry the film,” a source told a leading entertainment portal.
Yami Gautam’s Rising Stardom
Yami Gautam has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood with films like Vicky Donor, Bala, and most recently OMG 2. Her performance in action-thriller Uri: The Surgical Strike also earned her widespread recognition. She is expected to bring a fresh energy to the franchise.
The actress has reportedly already begun prep work for the role, which is said to be physically demanding and emotionally intense, similar to Vidya Balan's iconic character Vidya Bagchi.
Production Plans and Release Window
The film is likely to be shot across multiple locations including Kolkata and London, staying true to the franchise’s aesthetic. Sujoy Ghosh is also co-producing the project. No official announcement has been made by the studio yet, but insiders reveal that the team is aiming for a 2027 release.
Vidya Balan’s participation, if any, remains unconfirmed. However, sources indicate that the new story is standalone and does not require her character to return, making way for Yami Gautam to lead the narrative.
