Aespa Stars Win Deepfake Case; Perpetrator Jailed

In a significant legal victory against digital exploitation, K-pop group Aespa members Karina and Winter have successfully won a case against an individual who circulated deepfake videos using their faces. The perpetrator, identified only as Mr. A in court documents, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison.

Case Details and Sentencing

On June 18, Aespa's management agency issued an official notice across social media platforms announcing the court's decision. The First Criminal Division of the Daegu High Court not only sentenced Mr. A to jail time but also ordered him to complete approximately 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program. Additionally, a seven-year employment restriction ban has been imposed, preventing him from working in any capacity related to children and adolescents.

The agency stated that they would continue to take strict legal action against anyone posting malicious content targeting their artists. Their monitoring efforts, both domestically and internationally, have collected thousands of pieces of evidence, including malicious posts and comments across various online communities and social network services. Mr. A was charged with creating deepfake images and videos of Karina and Winter for profit.

Broader Impact on K-pop Industry

This case highlights a growing trend of deepfake and AI-generated content targeting K-pop idols and Korean actors. Many celebrities have reported anonymous individuals using their faces without permission to promote goods and services or create malicious content. Aespa is not the only group affected; BLACKPINK previously faced similar issues, prompting their management to file legal complaints against anonymous users.

Former Sharp member and broadcaster Lee Ji Hye also recently spoke out about deepfake scams. She posted screenshots of advertisements illegally using her face and urged fans to be cautious, emphasizing that she never endorsed such products. She condemned those who use deepfake technology for fraudulent activities.

Aespa's Recent Activities

Meanwhile, Aespa has been actively promoting their second full-length album titled 'MY WORLD,' released on May 29. The album has achieved significant success, topping charts and ranking number 9 on the Billboard Top 200 music charts.
