Mimoh Chakraborty on success, struggles, and legacy: 'I don't seek validation anymore'
Mimoh Chakraborty: Success is peace, not validation

Redefining Success Beyond Box Office

For Mahaakshay Chakraborty, better known as Mimoh, success today is not measured by box office numbers, industry validation, or comparisons with the towering legacy of his father, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. Instead, it is defined by peace, gratitude, and the ability to remain grounded through life's many highs and lows. In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Mimoh opens up about the invaluable lessons he learned from watching his father's struggles, why he no longer seeks external validation, and how embracing uncertainty has transformed his outlook on life.

School Days and Early Influences

Mimoh recalls his school days as ordinary, with birthdays being the best because he could wear civilian clothes. He was a studious child, particularly fond of physics and fascinated by space and astronomy, interests he still pursues through online courses. He was not mischievous, aiming only to avoid punishment. Despite being the son of Mithun Chakraborty and Yogeeta Bali, he faced snobbish looks from classmates who assumed special treatment, though teachers were always fine. He never got into trouble at school and rarely discussed school life at home, as his father worked six shifts a day and was hardly around.

Discovering the Acting Bug

Mimoh initially wanted to become an astronomer, but after the release of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and Hrithik Roshan's overnight success, star kids began getting offers. He was approached for a film at age 16, but his father advised him to complete his studies first. That planted the seed, and he started training in acting, horse riding, dancing, and other skills. His parents supported him fully, making him understand the need for preparation in acting classes, horse riding, MMA, and Indian classical dance.

Debut and Industry Realities

Before the release of his debut film Jimmy, Mimoh was extremely nervous. The film did not perform as expected, leading him to wonder about his next steps. He relied on family and friends for support, and Salman Khan was a great supporter, reminding him not to let highs and lows define him. Mimoh emphasizes that the film industry is a business: if you are profitable, people invest; if not, they don't. He never took it personally and understands that human beings tend to judge without knowing all facts.

Father's Inspiring Journey

Mimoh draws immense inspiration from his father Mithun Chakraborty's struggles. He recalls a story where his father stood outside a producer's office from 8 AM to 8 PM, refusing to leave even to use the washroom for fear of missing the producer. Such stories taught him resilience. He says, 'If he could refuse to quit after going through his own hell, then how can I quit?'

Auditioning and Role Choices

Mimoh continues to audition for roles, believing it is part of an actor's craft. He is open to all kinds of roles—hero, villain, supporting—in any language, as long as the role challenges him. He says, 'Even if I fail, at least I can say I challenged myself and gave it my best.'

Success of Haunted 3D

The film Haunted 3D was loved by audiences, and its sequel has performed well. Mimoh is grateful after three challenging years. He says, 'The most beautiful part is that people are finally seeing the film. They're watching it, liking it, and loving it.' He does not see this as validation, as he no longer seeks external approval.

Compartmentalizing Life

Mimoh attributes his contentment to compartmentalization. He is not just an actor but also a son, brother, husband, friend, hotelier, and collector. He enjoys simple things and does not carry one emotion into the next part of his day. He recalls Novak Djokovic saying that tennis is part of his life, not his entire life, and applies that to acting.

Personal Life and Marriage

Mimoh met actor Madalsa Sharma at a music launch event after previously working with her mother, Sheila ji. He made the first move and knew she was the one. He describes marriage as 'the best feeling in the world' and says they are best friends who share everything. He is extremely proud of her success as an actor.

Advice for Newcomers

Mimoh advises newcomers to accept that 99% of things are beyond their control. He says, 'Don't react to things that are beyond your control, because most things in life will always be beyond your control.' He also emphasizes patience and not seeking validation from others. He loves the saying, 'What other people think of me is none of my business.'

Future Projects and Family

After the success of Haunted, Mimoh is reading scripts for web series and films. He is open to working with his father Mithun and brother Namashi if the right project comes along. He is also grateful for his sister Dishani's upcoming wedding, saying, 'When blessings come your way, all you can do is fold your hands and say thank you.'
