The Gujarat state government announced on Thursday that a project to install biogas plants around the Statue of Unity in Narmada district is nearing completion. This initiative is expected to help 1,000 families achieve self-sufficiency in cooking gas.
Project Background
During last year's Rashtriya Divas Parade at Ektanagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that biogas plants would be installed in the homes of 1,000 tribal families living near the Statue of Unity. The project is being implemented across 89 villages under 38 village panchayats in Garudeshwar taluka, Narmada district, according to an official statement.
Impact on Daily Life
Ravina Tadvi, a resident of Vaghpura village located about 7 kilometers from the Statue of Unity, shared that the biogas plant has significantly improved her family's daily life. She said, “Now we don’t worry about LPG cylinders. We get clean fuel every day, and the slurry from the plant serves as an excellent alternative to chemical fertilizers, increasing crop production.”
Another resident, Chandu Tadvi, highlighted the benefits for women: “Women have benefited the most from the biogas plants. Earlier, they had to travel long distances to collect wood for cooking. But now they are self-sufficient in cooking gas.”
Progress and Implementation
The statement confirmed that 665 biogas plants have already been installed, with the remaining installations underway. Under the project, the government bears all costs for setting up the plants, while beneficiaries are required to contribute labor for digging the necessary pits.
