Goa Unveils Comprehensive Wellness Policy 2026 with Mandatory Accreditation Framework
In a significant move to bolster tourist safety and eliminate unethical practices, the Goa tourism department has officially notified the Goa Wellness, Ayurveda and Yoga Policy, 2026. This landmark policy establishes a formal regulatory and accreditation system covering all spas, eco-retreat hotels, wellness centers, Ayurveda clinics, and yoga schools operating throughout the coastal state.
Tiered Quality Label System at Policy Core
The cornerstone of this new framework is a sophisticated tiered Goa wellness quality label program. Under this system, all facilities will undergo rigorous assessment and receive rankings based on their compliance with regulations and overall service quality standards. Notably, this requirement extends even to yoga centers or wellness facilities that operate as components of already registered hotels, resorts, retreats, or integrated tourism complexes.
Apex Committee to Oversee Quarterly Inspections
A dedicated wellness, Ayurveda and yoga committee has been established as the apex governing body responsible for overseeing all accreditation and certification processes across Goa. This committee will implement a strict inspection regime, with physical examinations of facilities conducted on a quarterly basis to ensure ongoing compliance.
Tourism Director Kedar Naik clarified that while accreditation remains formally voluntary, centers operating without official accreditation will face significant consequences. "Unaccredited centers will be systematically excluded from all state-led marketing campaigns and tourism initiatives," Naik emphasized. He further warned that accreditation status can be suspended or completely withdrawn for facilities found to be non-compliant with established standards.
Comprehensive Coverage with Specific Exclusions
The policy encompasses a wide range of wellness establishments including Ayurveda centers, yoga and meditation studios, holistic wellness centers, integrated wellness resorts, and nature-based retreat facilities. However, the framework specifically excludes beauty salons, cosmetic clinics, gyms, physiotherapy centers lacking structured wellness programs, and religious institutions offering yoga exclusively as part of spiritual practice.
Vision for Structured Wellness Tourism Ecosystem
"The state envisions creating a structured wellness tourism ecosystem that seamlessly integrates preventive healthcare, traditional systems of medicine, holistic therapies, lifestyle wellness, and nature-based experiences," explained Naik. "This initiative aims to support local livelihoods while promoting balanced development across hinterland and rural areas of Goa."
Strategic Objectives and Alignment
Through this comprehensive policy, the tourism department seeks to position Goa as both a nationally and internationally recognized wellness destination while simultaneously deterring unauthorized and non-compliant operators. Additional objectives include promoting employment opportunities and fostering local entrepreneurship in rural and hinterland regions. The policy has been carefully designed to align with both the Goa tourism master plan and national Ayush frameworks, creating a cohesive approach to wellness tourism development.
