The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heat wave conditions in Chandigarh and surrounding areas, as temperatures are expected to rise sharply over the next few days. Dry weather is forecast to persist for the next five to six days, leading to heat wave conditions between May 18 and May 22. Maximum temperatures are likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius during this period.
Severe Heat Expected in Southern Parts
While severe heat wave conditions are anticipated mainly in the southern and southwestern parts of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and nearby areas will also experience above-normal temperatures. The yellow alert category indicates that the heat is tolerable for the general public but may pose moderate health concerns for vulnerable groups, including infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
Current Temperature Trends
On Saturday, Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this period. The minimum temperature settled at 22.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. However, meteorologists have forecast a steady increase in daytime temperatures starting Sunday, with the mercury potentially reaching nearly 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the city and the Tricity region.
Advisory for Residents
The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the afternoon hours. People are urged to stay hydrated, wear loose cotton clothing, and cover their heads when stepping outdoors. These precautions are essential to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration.
