Tragic Septic Tank Accident in Sitamarhi Claims Four Family Members' Lives

A devastating incident in Sitamarhi district has resulted in the tragic deaths of four members of a single family due to asphyxiation. The accident occurred on Tuesday night in Kurhar village, located under the Bokhara block, casting a shadow over Holi celebrations in the community.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to police reports, the tragedy began when Rajiv Sahani, aged 45, entered his household septic tank for routine cleaning. While inside the confined space, he lost consciousness after allegedly inhaling poisonous gases. Witnessing his distress, his brothers—Ravindra Sahani (38) and Vinay Sahani (24)—along with his 14-year-old son, Krishna Kumar, immediately rushed to his rescue.

Tragically, all three rescuers also fainted after being exposed to the toxic atmosphere within the tank. The four men were quickly transported to Sadar Hospital in Sitamarhi due to their critical condition. Despite medical efforts, all four succumbed to their injuries late Tuesday night.

Community Impact and Additional Casualties

The incident deeply affected the village, with several women from the neighborhood attempting to assist during the emergency. These women reportedly experienced dizziness and other symptoms from exposure to the gases. Bokhara police promptly admitted them to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) for treatment.

Fortunately, these women were later discharged after receiving medical attention, but the event has left the village in mourning during what should have been a festive Holi period.

Broader Context and Safety Concerns

This tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers associated with manual septic tank cleaning, particularly in residential settings where proper safety equipment and procedures may be lacking. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by toxic gases in confined spaces and the importance of emergency preparedness.

Local authorities are investigating the exact circumstances, while the community grapples with the loss of four family members in a single, preventable accident.
