Kerala has been placed on high alert after a 40-year-old man in Kozhikode tested positive for the Nipah virus in preliminary screening, officials said on Thursday. The development has prompted the Health Department to initiate urgent measures to identify and isolate individuals who may have come into contact with the patient.
Health Department Responds
Following the preliminary positive result, the Health Department launched efforts to trace and quarantine all possible contacts. A team of medical experts has been deployed to the area to conduct further tests and monitor the situation. The patient is currently under isolation at a designated medical facility.
Previous Nipah Outbreaks
This is not the first time Kerala has faced a Nipah threat. The state experienced a deadly outbreak in 2018, which claimed several lives and led to widespread panic. Since then, the state has strengthened its surveillance and response mechanisms to handle such zoonotic diseases.
Public Advisory
The Health Department has urged the public to remain calm and follow safety protocols. People are advised to avoid close contact with suspected patients and to report any symptoms such as fever, headache, or respiratory distress to the nearest health center. Consuming fruits that may have been partially eaten by bats should be avoided, as bats are known carriers of the virus.
Authorities are also conducting awareness campaigns in the affected region to educate residents about preventive measures. The district administration has been instructed to ensure adequate availability of medical supplies and personnel.
