A middle-aged woman from Kozhikode died of Shigella infection on Sunday, marking the sixth fatality from the bacterial disease in Kerala this month. The state also reported seven new cases on the same day, with two each in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, and one each in Thrissur, Malappuram and Wayanad.
Rising case count
With these additions, the total number of Shigella cases in Kerala has reached 216 for the year, with 140 cases and six deaths recorded in June alone. The health department has declared outbreaks in four districts: Kozhikode (42 cases), Wayanad (19), Thrissur (12) and Alappuzha (3).
District-wise distribution
Other districts reporting cases this month include Malappuram (20), Thiruvananthapuram (17), Kannur (10), Kollam (9), Idukki (3), Palakkad (3) and Ernakulam (2). Health officials are monitoring the situation and have urged the public to maintain hygiene and seek medical attention for symptoms like severe diarrhea and fever.
