Ranchi Installs Eco-Friendly Shelters for Heat Relief

Ranchi Municipal Corporation Launches Heat Relief Initiative with Eco-Friendly Shelters

In response to escalating temperatures and the associated health hazards, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has initiated a proactive measure by establishing temporary resting places, known as 'saray', along with complimentary drinking water facilities, referred to as 'pyaau', at multiple strategic locations throughout the city. This innovative project aims to deliver immediate respite to pedestrians, street vendors, daily wage laborers, senior citizens, and other individuals who are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of intense heat.

Sustainable Design and Community Focus

According to Nikesh Kumar, the assistant municipal commissioner, all these temporary shelters are being constructed using environmentally friendly materials, primarily bamboo, and feature thatched roofs. This design not only ensures a cool and shaded environment but also represents a sustainable and locally adaptable solution to the urban heat challenges faced by Ranchi. Kumar emphasized that this initiative marks the first time such a comprehensive heat relief program has been implemented in the city, highlighting RMC's commitment to public welfare and climate resilience.

Strategic Locations and Operational Details

A total of 15 'saray' are planned for installation over a period of 90 days, with 11 already operational at key high-footfall areas. The selected sites include Bahu Bazaar, Khadgada bus stand, Firayalal Chowk, Booty More, Kanke Road, Hinoo Chowk, Birsa Chowk, Saheed Maidan, Dhurwa bus stand, Singh More, ITI Bus Stand, Ratu Road Durga Mandir, Argora Chowk, Lowadih Chowk, and Harmu Chowk. These locations were carefully chosen based on criteria such as footfall intensity, exposure to direct sunlight, and the presence of vulnerable working populations, ensuring maximum impact and accessibility for those in need.

Each shelter is equipped with a daily supply of 120 liters of water, provided by the RMC, to ensure adequate hydration for users. In a move to empower local women, all shelters are manned by members of self-help groups, fostering community involvement and providing employment opportunities. This dual approach not only addresses immediate health concerns but also supports social and economic development within the city.

The initiative underscores RMC's dedication to creating a safer and more supportive urban environment during extreme weather conditions, setting a precedent for other cities to follow in combating heat-related risks.
