Telangana Kicks Off Extensive Health Screening Initiative for Women in Self-Help Groups
In a significant move to bolster women's healthcare, the Telangana health department launched a large-scale health screening program on Sunday, coinciding with International Women's Day. The initiative targets nearly 46 lakh women associated with self-help groups (SHGs) across the state, aiming to provide comprehensive medical check-ups and promote preventive care.
Launch Event and Program Details
The program was officially inaugurated at Adivasi Bhavan in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. It encompasses women from approximately 4.37 lakh self-help groups spread across all 33 districts of Telangana. With support from the non-profit Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), participants will be transported to their nearest Primary Health Centres (PHCs) for the screenings.
Free Diagnostic Tests and Digital Health Records
At the PHCs, women will undergo around 30 diagnostic tests free of cost, including checks for blood pressure, blood sugar, and thyroid function. Officials emphasized that this effort will help create digital health profiles for each participant. After the check-up, a digital health record featuring a QR code will be generated and stored in the state's e-HMIS portal. This system enables doctors to easily access medical information, facilitating timely treatment and ongoing healthcare management in the future.
Focus on Early Detection and Preventive Healthcare
During the launch, the health minister highlighted that the initiative is designed to promote early detection of diseases and improve access to preventive healthcare for women linked to SHGs across Telangana. The minister underscored the importance of addressing women's health concerns, particularly noting that cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in India, following breast cancer.
Statewide HPV Vaccination Program Officially Launched
On the same occasion, the HPV vaccination program, which had been unofficially initiated a week earlier, was officially launched statewide. This program targets girls between the ages of 14 and 15 years, with nearly four lakh girls expected to be covered. The move comes in response to the approximately 3,200 cervical cancer cases reported in Telangana annually, aiming to reduce the incidence through vaccination and awareness.
The comprehensive health screening and vaccination efforts represent a proactive step by the Telangana government to enhance women's health outcomes, leveraging digital technology and community-based approaches to ensure broader accessibility and effectiveness.
