West Bengal Launches Two Eco-Friendly Electric Crematoria on Hooghly River Banks
In a significant move towards environmental conservation, the West Bengal State Mission for Clean Ganga has successfully established two state-of-the-art electric crematoria along the banks of the Hooghly River. These facilities, located in Kalyani and Barrackpore, are designed to provide pollution-free cremation services, marking a pivotal step in reducing the ecological impact of traditional practices.
Kalyani's First Electric Crematorium Ready for Operation
The electric crematorium in Kalyani, situated on the river bank in ward number 8 of Kalyani Municipality, represents the first facility of its kind in the area and is now fully prepared for commercial use. This crematorium is equipped with a modern furnace, a water scrubber system, and a 30-meter-long chimney, ensuring efficient and clean operations. The installation of this facility underscores the commitment to integrating advanced technology with environmental stewardship in urban settings.
Barrackpore's Unique Eco-Green Cremation System
At Rani Rashmoni Ghat in Barrackpore, the electric crematorium features a distinctive eco-green cremation system that sets a new standard for energy efficiency. This system incorporates a furnace, a three-stage decarbonisation filtration process, and a 30-meter chimney, all designed to minimize environmental harm. According to a government official, "The key feature of the electric crematorium at Barrackpore is its significantly lower electricity consumption, approximately 30% to 40% less than conventional electric systems, while ensuring minimal air and water pollution." This innovation highlights the potential for sustainable practices in public infrastructure.
Government Initiatives and Broader Environmental Goals
The development of these crematoria is part of a broader initiative by the West Bengal State Mission for Clean Ganga to promote pollution-free cremation along the Hooghly River. An official emphasized, "Work on developing the two electric crematoria has been completed, featuring well-designed and aesthetically developed facilities aimed at reducing environmental impact." In addition to these projects, the mission, in collaboration with the state irrigation and waterways department, has signed a conservation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a German firm. This agreement focuses on managing the Icchamati and Jalangi river basins to remove pollutants and minimize erosion in the upper Ganga delta region.
The overarching objective, as stated by an official, is "to build the capacity of the government and all stakeholders to adopt an integrated river basin planning and management approach for the protection and rejuvenation of the Ganges and its tributaries." This holistic strategy aims to address pollution at multiple levels, from local cremation practices to broader river conservation efforts, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
