Zerodha CEO Pays Rs 2.5 Lakh After Losing Health Bet

Most people are happy when they win a bet. But Zerodha co-founder Nithin Kamath recently found himself celebrating a loss. His post on X caught attention for a simple reason: it wasn't about business or markets, but about an employee who set a health goal, stuck to it for months, and achieved something he once thought was out of reach. The result? Kamath ended up paying Rs 2.5 lakh after losing a fitness challenge. Judging by his reaction, he would gladly do it again.

The Employee Who Turned a Challenge into a Major Milestone

The story was shared by Rohit Agarwala, a content and media strategist at Zerodha. Posting a picture with Kamath on Instagram, he revealed that he had won a health challenge and walked away with Rs 2.5 lakh. “My biggest flex? That I won Rs 2.5L from @nithinkamath on a health challenge,” he wrote. But the cash reward was not what excited him most. “The money is secondary. It’s the push to take care of my health and lose 30 kg in the last year that has been the most rewarding. I don’t think any other place can give you this kind of an opportunity @zerodhaonline,” he added.

The Goal Was Simple, The Journey Wasn't

In a separate video posted on January 8, Agarwala shared details about the journey. He explained how the challenge began: earlier, he joined a group of 15 colleagues for a fitness challenge with a target of reducing his weight from 95 kg to 75 kg by January. To keep participants motivated, the group collectively put around Rs 1 lakh into the challenge. The idea was to encourage employees who wanted to focus more seriously on their health and fitness.

‘Becoming Fit Felt Like a Dream’

Agarwala admitted that weight loss had been a struggle for a long time. After putting on weight again over the years, getting back into shape did not seem easy. “Becoming fit felt like a dream,” he said. His efforts had already started before the challenge officially began. In April, he weighed 104 kg. By June, he had reduced his weight to 95 kg and entered the challenge. Months later, he crossed the finish line ahead of schedule. On January 8, he weighed 74.5 kg, beating the target he had set for himself.

The Role His Workplace Played

Agarwala said the company's focus on health helped him stay committed throughout the process. “My company is very health-focused, and it comes from the top. This was the change I needed in my life, which pushed me to take this seriously,” he said.

Nithin Kamath's Reaction

After Agarwala shared the story, Kamath reposted it on X and summed up his feelings in one sentence: “I lost a fitness bet, and I’m happy I lost this one,” he wrote. The post quickly gained attention online, with many users calling it the best kind of loss.

Internet Applauds the Transformation

The story drew praise from social media users, many of whom said the real victory was the health transformation. One user wrote, “Amazing, everyone should have a mentor like this. Rightly said ‘money is secondary’ Health First.” Another commented, “Lost the bet but won at life! Congrats Rohit on the insane 30kg transformation – that’s the real victory here. Nithin bhai, best way to lose money ever. This is what health challenges should be about. Massive respect to both of you.” One user added, “That’s satisfying… and I admire how you’re taking care of yourself even after the setback.”
