At least two people died and more than 40 others were hospitalised following an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood and shrimp processing factory in Manjankaranai near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district on Sunday. The incident occurred at around 10:30 AM local time, according to officials.
Workers Overcome by Toxic Gas
According to officials, workers and others present at the facility reportedly fainted after inhaling the leaked ammonia gas. The affected individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, where two were declared dead upon arrival. More than 40 others are currently undergoing treatment, with some in critical condition.
Emergency services and district authorities rushed to the spot soon after the incident was reported. The area was secured and efforts were undertaken to contain the leak and prevent further exposure. Fire and rescue teams worked to seal the source of the leak and ventilate the premises.
