The Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in partnership with the National Dental Commission (NDC), celebrated National Public Health Dentistry Day on 19 June 2026. The event took place at the NDC premises in RK Puram, New Delhi. The NDC is the newly established regulatory body of the Government of India, which has replaced the Dental Council of India to oversee the dental profession in the country.
Event Theme and Key Highlights
The observance was held under the theme "Healthy Mouth, Healthy Communities, Healthy Nation," underscoring the critical role of oral health in enhancing overall health and well-being, as well as in fostering healthier communities nationwide. Distinguished attendees included Dr. Sanjay Tiwari, Chairperson of NDC, and Dr. Chandrashekhar Janakiram, President of the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Dental Education Board.
During their addresses, the dignitaries emphasized the significance of Public Health Dentistry in improving population oral health, reducing oral health disparities, and strengthening preventive oral healthcare services across India. They commended the Faculty of Dentistry, JMI, for its efforts in promoting community oral health through academic and outreach initiatives.
Commitment to Community Oral Health
In a message shared on the occasion, Prof. Nadeem Yunus, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at JMI, reiterated the Faculty's dedication to improving community oral health through education, research, service delivery, and community engagement. He stressed that oral health is an integral component of overall health and highlighted the Faculty's ongoing community outreach programs aimed at promoting oral health awareness, disease prevention, and equitable access to oral healthcare services.
Educational Session and Screening Camp
An interactive oral health education session was delivered by Prof. Abhishek Mehta, who emphasized the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices, adopting healthy dietary habits, preventing common oral diseases, and seeking regular dental check-ups. As part of the observance, an Oral Health Screening Camp was organized for the officials and staff members of the National Dental Commission. Approximately one hundred individuals were screened and underwent oral health examinations. They also received personalized counseling on maintaining good oral hygiene, preventing oral diseases, and seeking timely dental care. Those requiring further treatment were advised to obtain appropriate follow-up care.
