Tamil Nadu Government Initiates Comprehensive Research on Food Packaging Plastics
The Tamil Nadu government has formally approached the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to undertake a detailed scientific study on the types of plastic that should be utilized for food packaging and other packing materials. This significant development was officially communicated to the Madras High Court during recent proceedings, marking a proactive step toward addressing environmental and public health concerns.
Focus on Hot Food Packaging and Single-Use Plastics
The proposed research will specifically concentrate on the effects of packaging hot foods, such as traditional dishes like sambar and beverages like tea, in single-use plastics. This focus is critical given the widespread use of such packaging in daily life across Tamil Nadu, particularly in urban centers like Chennai. The study aims to evaluate potential health risks and environmental impacts, providing evidence-based recommendations for safer packaging alternatives.
Judicial Intervention and Environmental Conservation
The submission was presented before a division bench comprising Justice N Sathish Kumar and Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy, who are presiding over a batch of pleas related to environmental conservation. The bench has been actively engaged in addressing issues that threaten ecological balance and public well-being.
In light of concerning research conducted by PSG Medical College in Coimbatore, which revealed the presence of microplastic pollutants in the placenta of a mother, the court emphasized the urgency of the matter. Taking a serious view of these findings, the bench directed the state government to implement robust measures to tackle plastic pollution and its associated health hazards.

Counsel for the state government assured the court that the food safety department will be duly informed and involved in the research process.
