Tamil Nadu's Healthcare Leadership Inspires National Policy Adoption
Health Minister Ma Subramanian emphasized Tamil Nadu's position as a national healthcare leader, noting that the Union government is actively adopting and implementing several of the state's welfare initiatives. Speaking to reporters at the Pudukkottai government hospital on Saturday, the minister inaugurated a new cancer radiotherapy center constructed at a cost of Rs 5.3 crore, underscoring the state's commitment to advanced medical infrastructure.
Pioneering HPV Vaccination Program Sets Global Benchmark
Minister Subramanian highlighted Tamil Nadu's groundbreaking drive to administer the HPV vaccine to 14-year-old girls, marking it as the first such initiative in the world. "The Union government has announced plans to implement a similar scheme nationwide," he stated. This cervical cancer prevention program currently provides vaccines to approximately 3.38 lakh children across the state, demonstrating a proactive approach to public health.
Financial Welfare Schemes Mirror State Innovations
The minister pointed out specific examples where central policies have drawn inspiration from Tamil Nadu's models. "Following the state's Innuyir kaapom scheme, which offers beneficiaries Rs 2 lakh, the Union government introduced a comparable program providing Rs 1.5 lakh," he explained. He added that the Centre has been incorporating cues from various other Tamil Nadu schemes, reflecting a collaborative approach to welfare development.
Expanding Cancer Treatment and Screening Infrastructure
With nearly one lakh people diagnosed with cancer annually in Tamil Nadu, the government is aggressively expanding treatment facilities. The number of districts equipped with cancer screening centers has surged from five to twenty-seven in recent years, significantly improving access to early detection and care. The newly inaugurated radiotherapy center in Pudukkottai is part of this broader effort to decentralize and enhance cancer treatment services across the state.
Record-Breaking Healthcare Outcomes and Recognition
Tamil Nadu boasts the lowest maternal and infant mortality rates in India, achievements that have earned recognition from the United Nations for its healthcare initiatives. Minister Subramanian attributed these successes to improved infrastructure, modern equipment, and enhanced services in government facilities, which have attracted patients from across the country to state-run medical colleges and hospitals.
Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam Initiative Reaches Millions
The minister reported that more than two crore people have benefited from the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam initiative, a community-based healthcare program designed to deliver medical services directly to beneficiaries. This initiative, along with others, has contributed to a significant increase in the number of individuals seeking treatment in government facilities, reinforcing Tamil Nadu's reputation as a model for effective and inclusive healthcare delivery.
