Non-Invasive Brain Stroke Treatment Gains Ground in Lucknow
In a significant medical advancement, brain stroke treatment is becoming increasingly less invasive, with doctors now capable of stopping brain bleeding without the need to open the skull. This breakthrough was highlighted by experts at a conference held in Lucknow on Saturday.
Catheter-Based Technique for Aneurysm Treatment
Prof Anit Parihar, Head of Radiodiagnosis at King George's Medical University (KGMU), detailed the innovative method. He explained that the technique involves inserting a thin catheter through a blood vessel in the leg, which is then guided to the brain to treat aneurysms. "Bleeding in the brain can now be controlled by reaching the aneurysm through a catheter from the leg and sealing it with coiling," Prof Parihar stated. He emphasized that this approach significantly reduces surgical risks and accelerates recovery times compared to traditional open surgery.
Expanding Applications to Prevent Amputations
Doctors at the conference noted that the same catheter-based approach is proving beneficial in other areas of healthcare. Specifically, it is helping to prevent amputations in diabetic patients by addressing blocked arteries in the legs. Through procedures like ballooning or stenting, blood flow is restored, promoting healing and reducing the likelihood of limb loss.
Widespread Adoption Across Medical Centers
Prof Dugesh Dwivedi from KGMU reported that this minimally invasive technique is now being implemented at multiple medical centers in the region. Institutions such as the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences are among those utilizing these advanced methods to enhance patient care.
