What is South Indian Buttermilk?

South Indian buttermilk, commonly called chaas, neer mor, majjige, or sambaram, is a spiced yogurt-based drink. It is made by mixing curd with water and whisking it with salt, spices, and herbs like curry leaves, green chilli, cumin, coriander, and hing.

Benefits of Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a healthy and refreshing summer drink that improves digestion due to its healthy bacteria content and is light on the stomach. It is a rich source of calcium and phosphorus, and regular intake is associated with increased bone mineral density and a reduced risk of osteoporosis. Additionally, it is low in fat and calories, helps reduce acidity, and provides energy throughout the day. According to a study, daily consumption of buttermilk leads to significant reductions in total cholesterol (by 3.1%), LDL cholesterol (by 3.1%), and triglycerides (by 10.7%). The research also indicates that buttermilk consumption can modestly reduce blood pressure.

What to Add to Buttermilk to Make It More Nutritious

Roasted Cumin Powder

Roasted cumin powder is said to balance pitta dosha (heat) in the body and cool you down in summer. According to Ayurveda, cumin powder also stimulates digestive enzymes, helping the stomach break down food more efficiently and digest it easily.

Ginger

Ginger stimulates digestive enzymes and bile production, making it easier to digest heavy meals. It also helps reduce gas, acidity, and stomach cramps.

Mint Leaves

Mint leaves are known for their natural cooling effect on the body. When combined with buttermilk, they make for a refreshing drink that helps regulate body temperature.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves stimulate digestive enzymes and help relieve issues like constipation, indigestion, and acidity.

Hing

When you add hing (asafoetida) to buttermilk, its carminative properties help prevent and relieve gas, bloating, and stomach discomfort.
