Mandatory Licensing for Tobacco Retailers
The municipal body has made it compulsory for every shop, stall, and establishment selling tobacco items to obtain an official MC licence. This decision comes as part of a broader initiative to monitor and control the distribution of tobacco products, particularly those being sold illegally or near educational institutions.
Municipal Commissioner Ritesh Kumar Chauhary emphasized that strict action will be taken against vendors operating without proper authorization. "Our teams will conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance," he stated.
Cracking Down on Illegal Sales
The new regulations specifically target several concerning practices that have emerged in recent times:
- Unauthorized tobacco sales without proper licensing
- Illegal sale of single cigarettes and loose tobacco
- Vending near educational institutions and public spaces
- Sales to minors and violation of existing tobacco control laws
Officials noted that many vendors have been operating without any form of regulation, making it difficult to monitor compliance with existing tobacco control laws.
Implementation and Enforcement
The municipal corporation has outlined a clear implementation plan:
- All existing tobacco vendors must apply for MC licence immediately
- New vendors must obtain licence before commencing operations
- Regular compliance checks will be conducted across the city
- Penalties will be imposed on violators, including potential cancellation of business permissions
This initiative aligns with the central government's Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), which already prohibits tobacco sales near educational institutions. However, the local administration found that enforcement has been challenging without proper vendor registration.
