In response to the severe heatwave conditions and a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the district administration of Kanpur has ordered the closure of all schools conducting classes from IX to XII until May 28, 2026. The city has been experiencing temperatures around 44 degrees Celsius for the past four days, leading to widespread discomfort and health concerns among residents.
Immediate Summer Vacation
Keeping the health and safety of students in mind, the district administration declared summer vacation with immediate effect until May 28 for all schools in Kanpur Nagar district. This decision applies to both government and private institutions.
Earlier Closure for Lower Classes
On Tuesday, the administration had already ordered the closure of all schools from primary level to Class VIII until May 31 due to the continuing hot climatic conditions. The extended closure for higher classes aims to protect older students as well from the extreme heat.
Authorities urge parents and guardians to ensure children stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. The IMD has warned that temperatures may remain high in the coming days, and further advisories may be issued as needed.
