Mysuru-Kodagu Member of Parliament, Yaduveer Wadiyar, has issued a strong directive to the Kodagu district administration, calling for urgent intervention to stop the flow of pollutants into the sacred River Cauvery. The appeal specifically highlights the deteriorating situation in the Kushalnagar region.
MP's Direct Appeal to District Collector
In a formal letter addressed to the Kodagu Deputy Commissioner, SJ Somashekar, the MP detailed the escalating crisis of contamination entering the river. Yaduveer Wadiyar pointed a finger at the incomplete Underground Drainage (UGD) project and the unchecked discharge of waste from both residential and commercial establishments in Kushalnagar. He emphasized that this negligence is severely compromising the river's cleanliness and spiritual sanctity.
Health Risks and Official Negligence
The parliamentarian brought attention to a alarming incident to underscore the real-world consequences of the pollution. He reported that several Sabarimala pilgrims recently developed skin ailments after bathing in the river. Yaduveer attributed this directly to the severely affected purity of the water, blaming the authorities for their failure to act. His letter is a clear demand for concrete measures to curb this environmental hazard.
Demand for Action Plan and Accountability
Going beyond mere complaints, the MP has sought a concrete action plan. He has formally requested a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner outlining the specific steps that will be taken to prevent further pollution. Yaduveer also revealed that the issue has gained the attention of the Human Rights Commission, which has issued notices to the concerned departments over the degrading water quality.
His recommendations for the administration include implementing immediate corrective measures and launching public awareness campaigns. He suggested installing warning boards across the river basin to educate people about preventing water pollution. Furthermore, Yaduveer Wadiyar has ordered the formation of a special technical committee. This committee's mandate would be to draft a comprehensive, actionable plan to tackle river pollution and restore the health of the Cauvery.
