Action Initiated Against Prominent Bakeries
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken strict action against five renowned bakeries in Mumbai, accusing them of using banned substances and maintaining substandard hygiene. This move is part of a broader state-wide crackdown on unsafe food practices that has intensified over the past few months.
Details of the Crackdown
According to an FDA official, the bakeries were found to be using artificial colors and preservatives beyond permissible limits. Samples collected from these outlets tested positive for non-permitted food additives, including saccharin and sodium benzoate. The FDA has issued show-cause notices and imposed fines totaling Rs 5 lakh.
"The safety of consumers is our top priority. We have zero tolerance for any compromise on food quality," said Dr. Pallavi Darade, FDA Commissioner.
Impact on Consumers
Over 200 food samples were tested across Mumbai in the last quarter, with 15% failing quality checks. The action against these bakeries serves as a warning to the entire food industry. Consumers are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious food products to the FDA helpline.
State-Wide Initiative
The crackdown is not limited to Mumbai. FDA teams have conducted raids in Pune, Nagpur, and Thane as well. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
